Mental Health Program

Time limited individual counselling and group services for people requiring support for mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress, grief/loss, coping or care giving. In addition to individual counselling, there are group programs for people experiencing depression, anxiety, insomnia and other topics (click here for workshop schedule).

Mental Health Counselling is provided for people who meet ALL of the following criteria: 

  • Experiencing difficult with a mood disorder (new diagnosis or acute exacerbation of symptoms), situational stress, life events, grief/loss, coping and/or caregiving
  • A patient of the Northumberland Family Health Team and have been referred to the mental health program by his/her physician, nurse practitioner or other member of the NFHT health care team
  • 16 years of age or older
  • Unable to access counselling services through private coverage, benefits, Employee Assistance Programs or other funded services
  • Have not received mental health counselling at NFHT in the past 6 months (does not apply to workshops or group programming)

People needing mental health services for the following reasons are NOT ELIGIBLE:

  • Active suicidal thoughts or behaviours
  • Active, suspected and/or undiagnosed psychosis (ie. schizophrenia, personality disorder)
  • Crisis intervention/services
  • Active addictions, substance use disorder or eating disorder
  • Case management/system navigation
  • Completion of forms, financial planning, social assistance navigation
  • Criminal investigations, assessment for legal/child protective purposes or court ordered treatment
  • Acquired brain injury, dual diagnosis or developmental delay
  • Parenting support or assessment
  • Educational assessment
  • Behavioural support

Program Activities and Services:

  • Telephone screening, triage and connection with internal/external services and supports
  • Short-term individual counselling
  • Group programming
  • Telephone and home visits

Goals for Participants:

  • Enhance, restore and maintain mental wellness

As has been widely reported, a new coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, China in late 2019, and there has been limited person-to-person transmission. The new strain of coronavirus is called Novel Coronavirus-Wuhan (nCov).

Northumberland Family Health Team is following

guidance from the Ministry of Health and taking precautions by asking all patients about symptoms and travel. Protocols are in place to appropriately isolate and test any patients requiring investigation.

For:  Patients of the NFHT who need an urgent appointment and are unable to get one at their doctor’s office.  This is an alternative to using a walk-in clinic.

  • Emergencies should still go to the hospital Emergency Department
