Smoking Cessation

The goal of the smoking cessation program is to educate, encourage and assist NFHT patients in quitting smoking.  Our team of trained health professionals provides individual counseling in a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere to patients that are ready to quit smoking. The patients are provided with resources and tools to help them in being successful. During their appointment behavioral modifications, coping strategies, stress management and smoking cessation products will be explored.

The Northumberland Family Health Team is participating in a smoking cessation program study called STOP (Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients).  This program is for family health team patients who are interested in quitting smoking and would like to use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) including nicotine patch, inhaler, lozenge and gum for assistance. This program provides free NRT in combination with counseling. The benefit of participating in this program is that it may help the patient quit smoking. Quitting smoking is the single most important thing that a patient can do to improve their health.

Patients can be referred to the Smoking Cessation Program by their NFHT primary care provider or health care profession.

As has been widely reported, a new coronavirus was discovered in Wuhan, China in late 2019, and there has been limited person-to-person transmission. The new strain of coronavirus is called Novel Coronavirus-Wuhan (nCov).

Northumberland Family Health Team is following

guidance from the Ministry of Health and taking precautions by asking all patients about symptoms and travel. Protocols are in place to appropriately isolate and test any patients requiring investigation.

For:  Patients of the NFHT who need an urgent appointment and are unable to get one at their doctor’s office.  This is an alternative to using a walk-in clinic.
